Abstract

1,139,157. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. May 10, 1967 [May 11, 1966], No.21656/67. Heading F1F. In a mixture-compressing rotary-piston I.C. engine, particularly of trochoidal type, having a three (or more) sided piston 5, planetarily rotatable within a casing having a peripheral wall 1 through which opens an exhaust port 2 and an admission port 3 controlled by the piston corners, an overflow passage 14 fitted with a throttle valve 15 inter-connects the compression and suction chambers 12, 11 at points in the peripheral wall where there is a pressure drop towards the suction chamber 11 at the time when a piston corner is passing between the points. The throttle valve 15 which is located near the compression chamber is linked with the throttle flap 10 in the admission port 3 and is open during engine idling and partial load and closed at all other times. During engine idling with the throttle flap 10 closed, only exhaust gas is for the most part contained in the suction and compression chambers 11, 12 and only a small amount of fresh gas located is initially in the vicinity of the trailing piston corners of the two chambers. As the piston rotates fresh gas at the trailing piston corner of the compression chamber 12 is transferred through the passage 14 to the leading end of the suction chamber 11 so that when that chamber becomes the compression chamber fresh gas is available for reliable ignition in the neighbourhood of the spark-plug 13. At partial load, and particularly in the case of carburetter operation, the main portions of the chambers are filled with a weak mixture which is generally inadequate for ignition and without the passage 14 the over-rich mixture would not be readily available in the neighbourhood of the spark-plug. As before, the over-rich mixture is transferred through the passage 14 to the leading end of the suction chamber to be readily available for ignition when that chamber becomes the compression chamber. The linkage between the throttle valve 15 and throttle flap 10 is such that with increasing opening of the flap 10 the valve 15 is closed to avoid losses under full load operation.
