Abstract

1452135 Valves ACF INDUSTRIES INC 23 Nov 1973 [8 Dec 1972 29 Dec 1972] 54444/73 Heading F2V A gate valve whose closure member is biased by a spring 50 to the closed position is provided with a piston 46 for fluid actuation of the member to the open position and with a fusible plug 65 to hold the member in the latter position, which plug is subject to compression by the spring and which, on melting, flows through a passage 78. As shown in Fig. 4 a spindle 34 of the closure member is bevelled at its end and held by two plungers 66 spaced from plugs 72 by the fusible material. In a further embodiment, Fig. 9, the spindle is held in a cup member 168 which in turn is held by balls in another cup member 160 screwed on the main body of the valve. When the material melts it flows either between spindle extension 174 and the cup member 168 or between spindle and a surface 184 of the member 168. Initially the spindle moves in member 168 until the balls fall into a groove 190 in the spindle when the spindle and member 168 move together in the other member 160.
