Abstract

1451340 Photographic type-composing MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 21 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972 15 Oct 1973] 59472/73 Heading B6W [Also in Division G2] Characters are printed in succession on a receiver web by imagewise transfer of pigment from an adjacent donor web under the action of heat from a flash lamp 19 while the web assembly 12, after manual positioning, is clamped between an image window 20 in a highly reflective coating on a template 22 and a plunger 88. Template 22 comprises two concentric arrays of characters, each being surrounded by a transparent area having character alignment marks 190, and is in the form of a replaceable disc on a turntable 134 having two sets of peripheral notches, each corresponding to a character. Template 134 is rotated and/or laterally moved manually by means of a knob 141 to bring any desired character window to the exposure station. It is also manually adjustable laterally with respect to web 12 by means of an indicator blade (164, Fig. 5) and a knob (158). To enable access to web rolls 40, template 22 is situated during exposure between pivotal support members 35 and 36, the latter carrying a pivotal flash lamp 19, a transparent exposure plate 16 and a transparent viewing plate 46. Manual lowering of lamp 19 for an exposure precisely locates the turntable by the engagement of a pawl (168, Fig. 10) with a turntable notch, raises plunger 88, and causes a flash. A further exposure is effected after manual advance of web 12 (by means of a knurled wheel 57) to line up a newly formed character under a mark 190 (visible through plate 46). In a modification (Figs. 12-19), the template has no alignment marks and consequently no outer transparent area, but is movable (caused by the lowering of lamp 19) from a see through position, for lining- up a character with a line (340, Fig. 13) on the exposure plate, to an adjustable exposure position.
