Abstract

1450697 Electric insulators O NIGOL 6 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56679/73 Heading H2C The body 10 of an insulator has its surfaces 17a, 17b entirely covered with a semiconductive layer, e.g. a glaze in accordance with Specification 1,408,210 and is such that the total of protected creepage distances KF is at least as great as the effective air clearance, namely the sum of distances AH, and the minimum air clearance AB is at least 3À5 inches, this distance being determined by the "splashing distance" of rain falling at 45 degrees to the axis of the insulator and the point K also being on a radius of 3À5 inches from point B. The surface resistively of the semiconductive layer should lie in the range of 5 to 200 megohms per square depending on system voltage in order that sufficient heat should be generated to inhibit moisture deposition. The electrical strength of the semiconductive layer in the protected areas is 10 kilovolts per inch. The semiconductive layers increase the capacitance of the insulator body as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2. This results in an increase in the capacitive current which, flowing in the semiconductive layer, contributes to the surface heating. A string of six elements of the type shown in Fig. 1 having resistance values between 30 and 100 megohms give satisfactory performance on 230 kv A.C. lines. In further embodiments each insulator body comprises a plurality of downwardly depending bell-shaped portions (20<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>11</SP>, 20<SP>111</SP>), Figs. 3-5, not shown); or a plurality of flared cones (30, Fig. 6, not shown) bonded together with conductive cement (31), which may alternate with bell-shaped spacers (34, Fig. 7, not shown). In still further embodiments (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) the insulator body provides first one bell-shaped portion (35) with an upper terminal provided by a semi-conductive layer of relatively high conductivity (39, Fig. 8) or a metal cap (40, Fig. 9) and a lower terminal provided by a metal post (36, Figs. 8 and 37, Fig. 9) cemented into the insulator body by conductive cement grout 38.
