Abstract

1449981 Severing webs by tearing JOHNSON & JOHNSON 8 July 1974 [9 July 1973 (2)] 30148/74 Heading B4B Apparatus for severing separate sections S from a web W, e.g. of non-woven fibre material, comprises first and second web holding means 17 and 19 respectively, located on one side of the web and arranged to co-operate with a further set of first and second holding means 28 and 26 located on the opposite side of the web, means for moving both sets of holding means into contact with the web and further means for moving both of the co-operating second holding means 19, 26 relative to both co-operating first holding means 17, 28 to sever the web. The holding means 17, 19 are in the form of jaws mounted in semi-cylindrical members 13, 15 the jaws being resiliently loaded by springs 20; the semi-cylindrical members are urged apart by springs 22 so as to normally maintain the operative edges of the jaws in engagement as shown in Fig. 3. The semicylindrical members 13, 23 are provided with shafts 14, 24 respectively, on which are mounted drive gears 21, 46 and 31, 34; the shaft 24 is rotated by a motor via a chain 41 and slipclutch 40. Co-operating cams 50, 32 and 47, 32 are mounted on the shafts. In operation, the web is fed between the two sets of jaws, the latter rotating until they contact to grip the web as shown in Fig. 3. Further rotation of the shafts 14, 24 then causes abutments of coacting cams to engage thereby forcing the jaws 17, 19 and 26, 28 apart against their springs 22 such action effecting severence of the web by tearing. The working edges of the jaws may be provided with rubber tips. In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5, a pair of jaws 112, 114 are mounted on a carrier 118 which is vertically reciprocable via pneumatic rams 123. The jaw 112 is resiliently mounted in the carrier and the jaw 114 is pivotally connected to the carrier and coupled by a linkage 118a, 125, 129 to the pistons 124 of the rams. The lower jaw 114a is pivotally mounted and normally urged towards a stationary jaw 112a by means of a spring 117. In operation, the upper jaws are lowered by the ram into contact with web, continued movement causing the jaws 114, 114a to pivot away from their associated jaws 112, 114 so as to tear the web. In a modification, the lower holding jaws may also be mounted on a pneumatic ram so that both sets of jaws are moved into contact with the web.
