Abstract

1449894 Gasification of heavy oils MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 29 Nov 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 55451/73 Heading C5E Heavy oils are coked in a fluidized bed coking furnace and the coked product gasified in a fluidized bed gasification furnace by heating a particulate alkali metal compound to a temperature at least 100‹ C. higher than the temperature in the coking furnace, and adding the heated alkali metal compound to the coking furnace independently of the heavy oil thereby forming a coke, and treating the coke particles with steam and oxygen or air in a fluidized bed gasification furnace to cause a gasification reaction to occur. The alkali metal compound, e.g. the carbonate or hydroxide of sodium, lithium or potassium or an admixture thereof, in powder or granular form, or supported on an inorganic refractory or an alkaline earth metal compound, e.g. alumina, murite, zirconia, or chamotte, or calcium or magnesium oxide or carbonate, or dolomite, may be heated to a temperature of not more than 500‹ C. higher than that of the coking furnace. The alkali metal compound may be recovered from the gasification furnace and recycled to the coking furnace.
