Stuffing-box joints. - In connecting pipes, and particularly in connecting an exhaust pipe to a silencer, a ring, Fig. 5, which is of spherical outer contour and is slit from the centre to the rear edge f is slipped over the pipe b, Fig. 2, which is then inserted into the socket. The part e contacts with the conical or complementarily shaped inner surface of the socket portion, and the whole is clamped by the nut g, which has an inner shoulder curved complementarily to the ring, the split portion of the ring being thus forced on the pipe b. Figs. 3 and 4 show how variations in length and alinement may be accommodated.
