Abstract

1445505 Recovering silver by electrodeposition CIBA-GEIGY AG 18 June 1975 [26 June 1974] 28330/74 Heading C7B Ag is recovered from a spent colour photographic bleach-fix solution 5 containing Ag ions and ferric ions by electrolysis in a cell 1 to deposit Ag on the rotating cathode 3, whilst continuously monitoring the redox potential of the solution, e.g. using a Pt + calomel pair of electrodes 4 connected to a milli-volt meter 8, and adding automatically a reducing agent, e.g. sodium dithionite, hydrazine, hydroxylamine, alkali metal (hypo) phosphite or borohydride, or ascorbic or sulphinic acid, either in aqueous solution 16 e.g. using a peristaltic pump 13 Fig. 1, or as powder e.g. in hopper 17 using an electrically driven Archimedian screw 18 Fig. 2, to the solution 5 when the redox potential rises above a predetermined level (-300 mV), e.g. using a potentiostat 9 connected to the meter 8 and a solenoid 10 which actuates a relay 11 in an electrical circuit powered by A.C. source 12 and which operates pump 13 or screw 18. The cathode may be of steel and the anode may be of carbon. The bleach-fix solution may contain a ferric-chelate complex as oxidizing agent and a water-soluble thiosulphate or thiocyanate as silver halide solvent or fixing agent, e.g. ferric ammonium EDTA, ammonium thiosulphate and sodium sulphite.
