1444348 Book covers; indexing books R GASPAR 27 Dec 1973 [27 Sept 1972] 44650/72 Headings B6A and B6E The individual pages of a book are provided with marks each including at least one element that points in a different direction on consecutive pages so that the elements appear to rotate when the pages are thumbed through, thereby facilitating the location of a desired page. As shown in Fig. 1, the directional elements comprise a plurality of lines 2 on each page, the mark on each page including a field 3 indicating whether the elements are printing upwards or downwards. The marks may be at the same position on the margin of each page, or staggered down the margins. The field may be separate from the directional elements, Fig. 2, and be made up of lines which change orientation to indicate different sections of a book as described below. Various examples of suitable marks are given, Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown). In a particular embodiment, Fig. 7, the directional elements 2 appear in a light field against a dark mark 4, the marks being staggered to produce oblique lines 6, 14 visible from the edge of the closed book denoting sections of the book. Additional elements denote the particular section in which the mark lies and these additional elements are shown on an index sheet for instance on the back cover 7 of the book at 12, together with the directional elements at 17 relating to specific pages. In this way a grid is produced which indicates the appearance of the mark present on a desired page, and the section of the book in which the desired page is to be found. The oblique lines may be distinguished by different colours, textures, lengths or widths. Thumbing through the leaves is facilitated by the provision of foam rubber pads 19 on the inside of the cover and in the middle of the book. Book Covers.-Where the book has hard covers, flicking of the pages is facilitated by providing a flexible joint 20, Fig. 7, between the two rigid parts of one cover. One part 22, Fig. 9 has a part-circular cross-sectional groove, and the other 21, a tri-angular cross-sectional groove, the grooves accommodating a correspondingly shaped link 23, of rubber. A heel 24 prevents the parts being bent inwardly and the gap 26 is filled with compression resistant material. Similarly, on the other side of the joint, the gap 25 is filled with stretch resistant material.
