Abstract

1443949 Thermal insulation NUCLEAR POWER GROUP Ltd 9 Aug 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 48958/72 Heading F2X [Also in Division G6] Fixing means attachable to a heat insulated structure and a relatively movable heat insulant containment shell member spaced from the insulated structure comprises a hollow metal stud having two or more helical channels through its longitudinal side walls such that it will expand or contract to accommodate axial thermal stresses set up by temperature differances between the structure and the shell member. As shown, a metal plate 10 forming part of a thermal barrier for the containment of the primary coolant gas in a nuclear reactor is attached to the inner wall of a metal liner 11 in a concrete pressure vessel (not shown) by means of a metal stud 12. The stud 12 has an end portion 12a, a through bore 12d and a hollow body portion 12b opening out to a mouth portion 12c. The body portion 12b contains three parallel, helical slots 13. The stud 12 is fixed at end 12a by means of a stud 14, welded to liner 11 which projects through the bore 12d and is secured by a nut 15. The mouth 12c of stud 12 projects through a hole in plate 10 and is surrounded by a collar 16 which also passes through plate 11 and has a conical bore 16a. In place of the gas between the plate 10 and the liner 11, a solid insulation material, e.g. mineral wool or ceramic fibre may be used. The plate 10 is one of a plurality of such plates arranged over the whole surface of the liner 11 and either overlapping or being joined by flexible margin portions.
