Abstract
1443900 Sintered tool steel CRUCIBLE Inc 11 March 1974 [30 March 1973] 10788/74 Headings C7A and C7D A compact formed from prealloyed particles by heat and pressure to greater than 95% of its theoretical density having a dispersion of MC and/ or M 4 C 3 carbides and/or oxycarbonitrides and/or carbonitrides of 7-16% of the total volume in an alloy steel matrix wherein the carbides, oxycarbonitrides carbonitrides are of FCC structure, wherein M represents V, Ti, Nb, Zr, Ta, Hf or combinations thereof and the alloy steel matrix is of composition:- C 0À01-0À6% Cr 0-16% Cu 0-15% Mn 0À01-1À5% V 0-2% Ti 0-1À5% Si 0À01-2À5% W 0-45% Al 0-0À5% Ni 0-20% Mo0-10% Fe + impurities balance. The compact may be in the form of an intermediate product e.g. bullets, blooms, rod or bar or may be a finished tool steel article e.g. punches, dies or wear plates and may be austenitized at 1750‹F for 1 hour, oil quenched and tempered at 500‹F for 2 periods each of 2 hours. Powder Metallurgy Process. The powder made by induction melting and gas atomization may be screened to -40 U.S. mesh, placed in a mild steel can, outgassed, sealed and heated to 2140 F for 9 hours, subjected to 13À2 ksi isostatic pressure, cooled to ambient temperature and hot forged at 2000‹F.
