Abstract

1442857 Endless-track vehicles CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 16 July 1973 33700/73 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] A hydropneumatic piston-cylinder spring for maintaining the tension in the endless track of a track-laying vehicle (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises a cylinder having a small diameter portion 44 in which a working piston 50 slides and a larger diameter portion 32 in which a free piston 34 slides, imcompressible fluid, e.g. grease, between the pistons, and gas behind the piston 34. The cylinder is fixed and a piston-rod 26 carries an idler wheel (16, Fig. 1) over which the track passes. Inward movement of the piston 50 results in a smaller movement of the piston 34 to compress the gas. The small diameter cylinder portion 44 is detachably bolted on the other portion and a safety arrangement 64, 70 ensures that the bolts 38 cannot be removed unless the gas chamber 30 is vented. The tension in the track may be adjusted by supplying more grease to the space between the pistons.
