Abstract

1441971 Guiding chains J D DUGGAN 1 Nov 1974 [25 Oct 1973] 49862/73 Heading B8B A chain guiding apparatus includes a load cell arrangement 17 which measures the chain tension generating force on a chain wheel 14 both when the chain wheel is locked by a pawl 10 and all the force is applied to the chain wheel by the tensioned free end of the chain 2, and when the chain wheel is free and forces are applied thereto by the tensioned free end of the chain and the other end of the chain which is loaded by a winch. The apparatus comprises an arm 7 pivoted at 6 to a fixed frame 3, and pivotally carrying the chain wheel 14 at axis 16, a ratchet wheel 15 extending outwardly from the chain wheel. The load cell arrangement 17 is mounted between brackets 8 on the arm 7 and the frame 3. The pawl 10 is mounted on the arm 7 for pivotal movement from and into engagement with the ratchet wheel 15 under the control of an hydraulic ram 12. In order that a common scale calibration can be used for the load cell reading whether the chain wheel is locked or free, a mathematical relationship must be established between the divergence angle α of the two parts of chain 2 leaving the chain wheel and the distances between the pivots 6 and 16, and the pivot 6 and line of tension T in the depending chain part.
