Abstract

1441779 Catalysts for electroless plating SHIPLEY CO Inc 4 Oct 1973 [27 June 1973] 46370/73 Heading C7F An electroless plating catalyst for a substrate of e.g. epoxy resin and Cu, comprises (1) catalytic metal ions e.g. Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh, (2) stannous ions in an amount in molar excess of the catalytic metal ions, (3) hydrogen ions to give a pH less than 3.5, preferably 1 to 2.5, and (4) extraneous halide ions, the concentration of which at a pH below the precipitation point of the catalyst is sufficient to make the total halide ion concentration at least 0À2 mole/l in excess of the concentration of halide ions provided by all other components, and at a pH above the precipitation point, the concentration is at least sufficient to present precipitation. The extraneous halide ions may be aluminium chloride or bromide, magnesium chloride sodium, or potassium chloride or bromide, calcium chloride or fluoride or lithium halides. The electroless platings may be Cu.
