Abstract

1,256,209. Etching. KENVERT INTERNATIONAL CORP. 18 June, 1970 [18 June, 1969; 6 May, 1970], No. 29582/70. Heading B6J. Copper, zinc, cadmium, brass or aluminium are etched with a composition comprising (1) 0À5-2À0 gram moles per litre of a haloacetic acid constituent containing the radical CXnH(3-n)COO-, in which X is chlorine, bromine or iodine and n is 1, 2 or 3, (2) 2À5-10À0 gram moles per litre of an ammoniacal constituent, and (3) a constituent providing ions of iodine, bromine or a noble metal or a mixture of such ions. (1) The acid may be trichloroacetic acid, dichloroacetic acid or dibromoacetic acid. (2) The ammoniacal constituent may be ammonium chloride or ammonium hydroxide. (3) The noble metal may be mercury, palladium, gold or silver. Examples of the ion-providing constituent are potassium iodide, sodium bromide, mercuric acid and potassium iodide, and silver nitrate. The pH of the composition is at least 7À5, preferably 8-11, and may be adjusted by adding sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid. The composition may also contain (4) 0À1-0À6 gram ion per litre of cupric ion, provided by cupric chloride, copper sulphate or copper acetate, and/or 0À2-3À0 gram ion per litre of chloride ion, provided by cupric chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium chloride or potassium chloride, and (5) 0À05-0À5 gram moles per litre of phosphate radical, provided by trisodium phosphate or phosphoric acid. The composition can be regenerated by adding more of the same composition together with ammonium chloride. The metal is etched at a temperature of at least 100‹ F., preferably 110-130‹ F.
