Abstract

1440931 Impregnated fabric; PTFE composites TBA INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS 3 Aug 1973 [6 May 1972] 51421/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division F2] A composite comprises a preformed non- porous layer of PTFE bonded to a layer of cured, fibre-reinforced thermoset resin material wherein either (1) the PTFE is unetched but contains a filler selected from asbestos fibre, glass fibre, ceramic fibre, metal powder, metal oxide, mica, or mixtures thereof with graphite and/or MOS 2 , the PTFE layer being optionally bonded to the other layer by means of an adhesive other than an aminotriazine-aldehyde resin; (2) the PTFE has been etched and contains as filler asbestos fibre, ceramic fibre, metal powder, metal oxide, mica or MoS 2 ; or (3) the PTFE has been etched and is bonded to the other layer by means of an adhesive other than an aminotriazine-aldehyde resin and is either unfilled or contains carbon or MoS 2 as filler. The fibre-reinforced layer may be of non-woven asbestos fibre felt, woven asbestos fabric or glass fibre mat which is impregnated with a phenolic, polyester, polyimide, silicone or epoxide resin. The metal powder filler may be of bronze, lead, stainless steel, tin or zinc and the metal oxide may be cadmium oxide or iron oxide. Etching may be effected by use of Na/ naphthalene in THF and the adhesive (when used) may be an epoxy/polyamide adhesive, bonding being effected under heat and pressure. The composites may be formed as pipes or bearings and the free surface of the fibre layer may be bonded to a metal backing layer.
