Abstract

1439553 Measuring wind velocity and direction S G SEM-SANDBERG 4 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 15016/74 Headings G1A and G1N [Also in Division H3] In an anemometer, a permanent magnet 7 is rotated by cups 21 past a fixed pick-up 4 and a second pick-up (5)' positioned by the vane 18 to generate two trains of pulses of equal but variable frequency dependent on the wind speed and relatively phase displaced depending on the wind direction. The pick-ups may be reed switches or series-connected pairs of coils (10, 11; 8, 9), Fig. 3 (not shown). The skirt 2" rides on balls 20. In another arrangement, Fig. 1(b) (not shown), the magnet is replaced by an arm (6) the pick-ups being switches (4, 5). Photo-electric arrangements. In Fig. 5 the cups rotate a counterbalanced arm carrying light emitting diodes 15', 15" co-operating with photodiodes or photo-transistors 14', 14". Alternatively, the cups may rotate an arm (12), Fig. 4 (not shown), to interrupt U/V paths between emittersensor pairs. The frequency and phase of the pulse trains is measured digitally [Division H3].
