Abstract

1439495 Grinding M RAUTENSTRAUCH 29 Aug 1973 [9 Sept 1972] 40678/73 Heading B3D Apparatus for chamfering or rounding the corners 13a, 13b of a glass plate 10 comprises a motor driven grinding tool 12, such as a grinding wheel or grinding belt, reciprocatable transversely to the direction of movement of the glass plate dependently on the front and rear edge 10a, 10b of the glass plate. The glass plate is moved by a feed mechanism, such as conveyer belts 30, over a frame 11 and past switches 14, 15 which are mounted above or below the sheet and have arms 16a, 17a provided with rollers 16, 17 for detecting the passage of the front and rear edges 10a, 10b of the sheet. The switches are adjustable relative to one another and to the frame 11 and have respective pulse generators 18 which control a valve 27 in an hydraulic circuit having a flow regulator 28 and a piston-andcylinder device 19 for moving a slide 23 along a bracket 25 on the frame 11. A support 24 on the slide carries a motor 21 for driving the grinding tool. The grinding tool initially overlaps the longitudinal edge of the glass sheet by a distance X. As the sheet is advanced by the conveyer belts 30, the leading edge 10a of the sheet engages the rollers 16, 17. Roller 17 actuates switch 14, the pulse generator of which operates valve 27 so that the device 19 is actuated at a speed determined by regulator 28 to move the grinding tool away from the sheet and grind the leading corner 13a. The tool is retained at a distance Y from the longitudinal edge until roller 16 detects the rear edge 10b of the sheet and its switch 15 causes the valve 27 to feed the tool towards the sheet to grind the corner 13b. The tool is moved at a constant speed to produce a straight chamfer or bevel or at a variable speed to produce a rounded chamfer. The slide may be guided by a lever system or guide tracks to move along a curved path to produce the rounded chamfer.
