Abstract

1438708 Gas-blast circuit-breaker FUJI ELECTRIC CO Ltd 14 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 58163/73 Heading H1N A gas-blast circuit-breaker with a moving cylinder 3 and fixed first-piston 4 has the cylinder space divided into main and auxiliary regions A and B respectively by means of a resiliently-mounted second-piston 7 which is provided with a one-way valve 9 to allow gas to transfer from region B to region A when pressure in A falls below that in B. The spring 8 maintains the piston 3 in position against the pressure in A during contact opening until a predetermined value has been reached, at which point it yields allowing the pressure in B to increase. This is stated to give an improved P/V characteristic as indicated in curves given in Fig. 4 (not shown) and thus reduce the arc-quenching time. When the contacts part and quenching gas, e.g. SF 6 , is discharged on to the arc, the fall in pressure in A is partly compensated for by the opening of the valve 9. An alternative arrangement in which piston 7 is mounted on the cylinder is envisaged but not described.
