Abstract

1438233 Sawing G G BERG 28 Feb 1974 [1 March 1973] 9087/74 Heading B5L [Also in Division G3] In a method of cutting cants or boards 4, 21 into a plurality of similar or dissimilar lengths, the length of board remaining after any given cut, as determined by the passage of a current; from source 16 via bus-bar 15 and contact member 17 fixed to member 3 contacting the rear of the remaining length; to one of the busbar sections 18, determines the length of the next cut to be made, the current passing from the contacted bus-bar section 18 via selectors 19 to one or other of lines A, B, C, selected, by means of assembly 23-26, in accordance with a program to minimize waste so that for each remaining length, a program predetermined one of abutments 6, 7, or 8 is raised to an active position. Passage of the current is enabled by operation of microswitch 14 by ejector 13, in ejecting the just cut length, return of the ejector to its starting position enabling feed forward of the remaining length of board, clamping of the board 4 and cutting of the next length being initiated by operation of microswitch 9, 10 or 11 of the next selected abutment, by the remaining length, fed forward by belt 2 supporting the member 3. Boards 21 of dissimilar uncut lengths within a given range may be stacked randomly, feed of all but the lowest being prevented by stop 22. The supply to the selected line A, B, or C operates a relay to enable pneumatic or hydraulic apparatus positioning the corresponding abutment in the active position. The program for minimizing water is detailed in the Specification. Embodiment with continuous feed forward, Fig. 2 (not shown).-Saw blade (27<SP>1</SP>), sections (18), and the abutments (6-8) move forward as an assembly during cutting, fixed inclined edge (30) ensuring that the blade moves into the board during the forward motion. The blade, in falling at the end of edge (30) operates a microswitch enabling the current source (16) and assembly (27<SP>1</SP>, 18, 6-8) returns to the starting position to remain stationary until the fore edge of the remaining length contacts the next selected abutment, whence advance of the assembly occurs again, operation of the microswitch having caused ejection of the last cut length. A chain (28), associated with rollers is provided for feeding the board.
