Abstract

1437761 Wells &c HALLIBURTON CO 18 Jan 1974 02535/74 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] A well bore circulating valve 1, for incorporation in a test string including well testing instruments and tools such as a pressure recorder, a formation sampler, hydraulic jar and one or more packers, comprises a tubular housing, a normally closed valve in the wall of the housing, the valve, when open and in a well bore, being arranged to provide a communication between the interior of the housing and the well bore, and means for opening the valve which is responsive to changes in pressure in fluid in the well bore for preventing opening of the valve until after at least a predetermined minimum of pressure changes has occured and then effecting opening of the valve. As described the valve consists of a port 31 (Fig. 1a) in housing 3 which is normally closed by a tubular skirt 21 engaging seals 34, 43. The skirt 21 is raised to open the valve by a ratchet mechanism (Fig. 1b) including a tube 2 having latch plates 24 urged inwardly towards a pull mandrel 5 by garter springs 28. The latch plates 24 and pull mandrel 5 are formed with ratchet teeth so that by reciprocating pull mandrel 5 the skirt 21 is progressively raised. The pull mandrel 5 is connected by members 51, 8 12 and 14 to a piston 13 (Figs. 1d, e) having a face 19 in chamber 46 which is in communication with the well bore fluids through port 45. Thus by increasing the pressure of the well bore fluid the piston 13 and hence the pull mandrel 5 is raised. When the pressure of the well bore fluid is decreased the piston is lowered by the action of an inert gas and/or a spring (not shown) in closed chamber 37. Member 12 (Fig. 1d) is formed with a piston 49 having a restricted orifice 53 and which moves in a closed chamber 48 containing oil to act as a damper during upward movement of the piston 13. A by-pass passage 57 and check valve 56 allows free downward movement of piston 13. Thus by alternately increasing and decreasing the pressure of the fluid in the well bore, the piston 13 and hence pull mandrel 5 are reciprocated and skirt 21 is progressively raised to open the valve.
