Abstract

1437144 Casting processes COMALCO ALUMINIUM (BELL BAY) Ltd 16 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 16613/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] A melt of an alloy comprising the balance, apart from impurities, being Al, is solidified with a growth rate of the solid phase of 10-5000 Á/sec. and a temperature gradient at the liquid/solid interface of 100-500‹ C./cm. to produce a solid alloy with (a) a microstructure substantially free from primary aluminium and primary silicon phases, and (b) a high volume fraction of dispersed eutectic Si, the silicon being present as fibrous or spheroidized eutectic particles less than 10 Á in diameter.
