Abstract

1434969 Pressure casting apparatus ETABS A VOISIN 7 Dec 1973 [15 Dec 1972] 56753/73 Heading B3F A low pressure casting apparatus comprises a mould having a base plate 6, a tank 8 for holding molten metal, the said tank being attached to the base plate 6, and a plurality of tubes 18 providing communication between the interior of the tank and the mould cavity. The mould may comprise a plurality of parts 2, 3 and 4 and may be provided with sand cores 5 having vents 30. The tank 8 is provided with a cover 7 which is fastened to the base plate 6 at particular points only so that a gap 6a in which a cooling fluid may be circulated is left between the two. Heating elements (12) may be provided in the cover 7 and walls of the tank. Molten metal may be introduced into the tank 8 through a funnel 22 which can be closed by a sliding valve 23. Ejector rods 15 for the casting pass through the tank 8 and are surrounded by a housing 19 to prevent contact between them and the metal within the tank. The casting operation may be controlled by means of a level sensor 27 which closes the valve 23 when the level of metal in the tank reaches the required height and initiates a supply of air under pressure to the interior of the tank to force the metal up the tubes 18 into the mould. After solidification of the metal in the mould, the molten metal in the tubes 18 may be drawn back into the tank 8 by connecting the interior of the latter to a vacuum source. The tank 8 is refilled after each casting operation since nearly all the metal contained therein is used up in each such operation. In an embodiment the mould defines a plurality of separate cavities, Fig. 5 (not shown).
