Abstract

1434824 Carbon artifacts COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 7 Nov 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 51899/73 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] Carbon artifacts are produced by mixing together a carbonizable binder, calcined coke grist produced from a solution or extract of coal, and between 1 and 40% of carbon fibres based on the weight of the coke grist, the fibres are randomly dispersed by mixing at a temperature at which the binder is a liquid, finally the mixture is shaped and carbonized, and optionally graphtiized. Both the carbon fibres and binder may be prepared from a solution or extract of coal. The carbon fibres are preferably present in an amount of less than 10%. The binder may be an electrode binder pitch, e.g. coal tar pitch, petroleum pitch or bitumen, and is preferably used in an amount of from 20 to 35% by weight based on the weight of the shaped mixture. In one preferred method the calcined coke grist and binder are first mixed at about 40‹ C. above the binder's softening point, then cooled to a solid before grinding and mixing with carbon fibres. This mixture is subsequently heated and extruded at about 20‹ C. above the softening point of the binder. Other preferred methods are given, e.g. the carbon fibres are mixed initially with the solution or extract of coal used for making the calcined coke grist and this mixture is then coked and further mixed with binder; alternatively the carbon fibres and binder are first mixed and the calcined coke grist is added subsequently in this method. Water and a wetting agent may be added. The produced artifact is suitable for use as an electrode.
