Abstract

1433907 Glass batches PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Sept 1973 [16 Sept 1972] 43086/73 Heading C1M A method of manufacturing a granular glass forming batch suitable for manufacturing a glass consisting of silica, at least one of Li 2 O, Na 2 O and K 2 O, at least one of BaO, CaO, SrO and MgO, and optionally alumina, lead oxide, cerium oxide, zirconia, boric oxide and a refining agent, the glass having a composition expressed in per cent by weight within the following ranges: SiO 2 50-75, Al 2 O 3 0-6, PbO 0-15, BaO 0-15, SrO 0-12 such that (PbO+BaO+SrO)>8, CaO+MgO<5, CeO 2 0-1, ZrO 2 0-8, such that (BaO + CaO +MgO + SrO)#1, Li 2 O+Na 2 O+K 2 O>13, B 2 O 3 >1, and refining agent 0-12, comprises preparing an aqueous solution containing at least 90% by weight of the alkali metal plus alkaline earth metal content of the glass as hydroxides, heating the solution to the boiling point, adding the silica, any remaining alkali metal-containing compound, any remaining alkaline earth metalcontaining compound, and optionally minimum, lead silicate, zirconia, alumina, a feldspar, cerium oxide, zirconium silicate, a refining agent and boric acid and/or boric oxide while stirring so as to disperse the solid materials in the aqueous solution, all ingredients being added in the amounts necessary for forming a glass of the above-defined composition, and then evaporating the resultant mass to dryness with continued stirring so as to form a granular batch.
