Abstract

1433488 Motor vehicle suspensions MOULTON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 30 April 1974 [13 Feb 1973] 7033/73 Heading B7D [Also in Divisions E2 and F2] The upper of two transverse arms 3, 4 in a motor vehicle front suspension is pivotally connected to the sprung structure 2 of the vehicle through a pair of frusto-conical resilient bushes each formed by two rubber elements bonded to an intermediate metal sleeve, the inner and outer surfaces of the bushes being in frictional engagement with conical surfaces presented by oppositely-projecting legs 31 on the upper arm 3 and by tapered housings 20, 21 on the sprung structure 2. One tapered housing 20 is bolted to the sprung structure 2 to facilitate assembly of the arm 3, and the resilient bushes are axially and radially pre-compressed between the surfaces on the housings 20, 21 and the legs 31 as the bolts are tightened. A hydropneumatic spring unit 5 acts on the arm 3 through a knuckle joint 6, and rubber buffers 7, 8 limit jounce and rebound movement of the arm. The pivot axis A of the arm 3 is downwardly inclined in the forward direction to provide an anti-dive characteristic.
