Abstract

1433289 Welding by fusion KOBE STEEL Ltd 1 May 1974 [1 May 1973] 19043/74 Heading B3R [Also in Division C7] A flux for submerged arc welding of steel comprises 0À01-0À5% weight of B in the form of boron oxide and/or a compound or mixture containing boron oxide, and one or more of the following (a) 1-6% weight Mn as the element, Fe-Mn, Si-Mn or mixtures of these, (b) 1À2- 5% weight as Fe-Si, Si-Mn or mixtures of these, (c) < 4À5% weight Ti and/or Al as the elements, Fe-Ti, Fe-Al or mixtures of these. Suitable B compounds added are borosilicate, borosilicon glass or borosilicate mineral anhydride such as tourmalin, danburite, kretoite 2 [Mg 2 Bo 3 ] or suanite 4 [Mg 2 B 2 O 5 ]. The metals Mo, Ni and Cr may also be added to the flux. The flux is preferably made by mixing the constituents with 18% water glass to form bonded particles -10 + 6À5 mesh Tyler. An example of the flux composition in % weight is 15 MgO clinker, 10 CaCO 3 , 4Al 2 O 3 , 4 fluorite, 5 rutile, 18 SiO 2 sand, 2 zerion sand, 28 Fe powder, 4 Fe-Si, 3 Fe-Mn, 1 Fe-Ti, 1 Fe-Mo, 5 tourmalin (7À82% B 2 O 3 ) equivalent to 0À123 B. The flux is used with a steel welding wire containing 0À06 C, 0À37 Mn, 0À01 Si, 0À008 P and 0À011 S. A 45 degrees "Y" type groove with aroot gap of 6 mm., a base metal thickness of 35mm. of a 50 Kg/mm<SP>2</SP> tensile steel is one side welded in a single run to a copper sheet using a backing flux and the following welding conditions. Three passes are overlapped by using 3 electrodes L 1 T 1 and T 2 in turn.
