Abstract

1433148 Applying labels to bottles; bursting apparatus P D MARE and A L ROSS 24 July 1973 [25 July 1972] 35218/73 Headings B8C B8F and B8R [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for individually dispensing tubular bands (labelling bands or heat-shrinkable neck bands for containers) from a continuous supply of bands severably attached in the form of a flattened tube, comprises a first pair of pressure contact rollers 116 driven at a certain speed, a second pair of pressure contact rollers 118 below the first pair and driven at a greater speed, and a floating tube/band opener member 114, 112, 6, 8 comprising a part 114 above the rollers 116, a part 112 extending downward between the rollers 116 and 118 and a spreader 6, 8 below the rollers 118. The flattened tube 60 is guided round rollers 126, 124, opened out over the bar 114, fed through the rollers 116 and down over rods 112 to the rollers 118. Because of the greater speed of rollers 118 the tube is severed at its weak point 66 to provide a band 64 which is opened out more on the spreader 6, 8. The angle of inclination of the members 6, 8 can be adjusted to suit the degree of opening required. Bars 130 eliminate static. The individually dispensed opened bands 64 can then be fed to automatic, semi-automatic or hand-operated band applying devices. The automatic band-applying apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) form the subject matter of divisional Specification 1,433,149. A hand-operated band applying device 82- 100 is shown beneath the dispensing apparatus of Fig. 4. As a band 64 drops on to the device it slides loosely down a curved member 94 and abuts a stop 92. An operator pulls a hinged member 100 to the right to expand the band, and inserts a container (not shown) between the members 94 and 100. The container is then pulled from the device and the labelling band snaps into place.
