Abstract

1433025 Copying by scanning SUBLISTATIC HOLDING SA 11 June 1973 [29 June 1972 15 May 1973] 27717/73 Heading H4F In a printing process wherein material is transferred from a carrier to an adjacent surface in response to a scanned modulated laser beam, the carrier comprises a substrate, e.g. of paper or regenerated cellulose film, coated or impregnated with a mixture of a non-transferrable binder and a transferrable dye material which vaporises or sublimes between 160‹ and 220‹ C., the mixture not melting below 220‹ C. Non- volatile sensitizers which efficiently absorb the laser light may be incorporated in the mixture to reduce the time required to volatilize the dyestuff. A further increase in the writing speed is obtained by heating the material to be dyed. As particularly described, a coloured original is scanned line by line to derive a plurality of colour separation signals which serve to electrooptically modulate respective scanning laser beams, or to sequentially modulate the same beam, the carrier being changed according to the particular separation signal being used. The laser beams may be amplitude modulated, or pulsed for varying durations in response to the separation signals. The or each carrier may be in the form of a roll, or a continuous strip, or, when a single laser beam is used, may comprise successive areas containing different dyes. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,284,266.
