Abstract

1432206 Motor vehicle engine compartment CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 29 June 1973 31164/73 Headings B7H and B7B [Also in Division F1] An engine compartment enclosure for an earthmoving vehicle comprises two side portions, front and rear end portions, a hood member and a bottom pan member, each side portion having at least one panel 17 comprising a plurality of spaced apart baffle elements 79 (Fig. 5), each of which includes a batt of sound absorbent material, arranged to define air flow passages therebetween for the transmission of cooling air between the interior and exterior of the engine compartment enclosure while substantially reducing transmission of sound from the interior to the exterior. The baffle elements 79 may consist of sound absorbent material (83) Fig. 6 (not shown) (e.g. a polyester-based urethane open cell foam, sintered metal or fibreglass) surrounded by an expanded metal cover (81), and may have a loosely fitting film (105) of, for example, polyethylene between the sound absorbent material (103) and the expanded metal cover (107), Fig. 10 (not shown). Access to the engine is afforded by having the side panel hinged at 19 (Fig. 1) and by using a hinged top panel (115), Fig. 11 (not shown). Constructional details of these panels are in Figs. 14 and 12 respectively (not shown).
