Abstract

1431818 Cutting glass PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 5 April 1973 [10 April 1972 (3)] 16229/73 Heading C1M A subsurface discontinuity 10 is produced under a major surface 37 of flat glass G along a predetermined path of cut by (a) urging a scoring wheel having a diameter of at least 12 millimetres and a scoring angle of at least 155 degrees against the major surface 37, (b) applying a force of at least 80 kilograms to the scoring wheel and (c) moving the wheel and glass G relative to one another at a speed of at least 25 centimeters per second to produce an indentation 11 in the major surface 37 and, concurrently, the surface discontinuity 10 along the intended path of cut. The glass then has a bending moment applied about the discontinuity to snap the glass to produce a cut edge which may then be finished and/or seamed. The subsurface discontinuity may be a subsurface crack or a subsurface score, both of which are defined. Preferably the wheel has a diameter in the range 18 to 100 millimetres; the cutting angle is between 155 and 170 degrees and the force is between 80 and 460 kilograms. As shown in Fig. 3, the discontinuity 10 may have a ridge 38 and lines 40 to 46, indicating direction of fracture propagation as a cut is run, are split at the discontinuity 10, as at 42, 42<SP>1</SP>; 44, 44<SP>1</SP>. As shown in Fig. 8, the discontinuity comprises two ridges 72, 74 interconnected by modulations or serrations 73. Specification 1,366,639 is referred to and the cutting wheel is as described and claimed in Specification 1,366,640.
