0,18

Cutting angle = 2 x sine arc (1 - -)
glass thickness
The present invention relates to a device allowing the cutting of glass, in particular thick glass.
To cut the glass, we usually do the following:
For thicknesses of the order of 6 mm and less, the normal technique consists in passing a roller over the glass, the sharp edge of which is applied to the surface; after cutting, the resulting edges are polished and bevelled.
The problem arises for thicknesses exceeding 6 mm.
In this case, the technique is slow and laborious, which consists in marking on the glass a crack or a notch according to the line where the cut must be made, then to cut using special punches.
The theoretical bases of this technique will be indicated below.
Chemical attack methods have also been tried.
In addition, from the patents of the United States of America Nc 3800991,3865293,3865294 and 3865673, processes are known which combine heat, preliminary marking, bending, associated with a large diameter cutting wheel.
The invention remedies the drawbacks of the techniques mentioned above, since the cutting is carried out in a single operation without prior marking, without the aid of heat and without continuously applying a bending moment.
It relates to a cutting device for glass which comprises a head subjected to the pressure of a pneumatic member, this head communicating a constant force to a cutting wheel pressing on the glass and being able to move in a manner substantially parallel to the glass for follow the cutting line.
The invention will be better understood with reference to the accompanying drawing, given by way of nonlimiting example.

Fig. 7 is a detail of the previous figure.
Fig. 8 is a detailed view of the point angle of the cutting wheel.
Fig. 9 is a side view of the device with its support and accessories, in an embodiment for the circular cut.
If we look at fig. 1, it can be seen that, in a glass sheet, there are three layers of internal stresses of the material.
In the two surface layers (I) and (3), the internal tensions of the material act in compression while, in the internal layer (2), these forces act in traction. This is shown in the line of the voltage diagram (4). The line of points (5) indicates the neutral situation in tension, and the passage from one side to the other of this line (5) by the curve (4) indicates the passage from a situation of traction to a situation of compression or vice versa.
In application of this general knowledge of the internal structure of a glass sheet, and with reference to FIG. 2, we will explain on a theoretical basis the cutting of the material in a traditional way.
Once a cut or crack has been made on the surface of the sheet along the line where it is desired to make the cut, manual strokes are applied in the direction of the force (N) using punches. The application of this force (N) causes an instantaneous bending in the material causing, in the diagram of the internal tensions, a deformation according to which the lower layer (3 ') tends to widen and the upper layer (1') to shrink.
The line (10) of separation between this upper layer (1 ') and the central layer (2') thus undergoes a displacement approaching the point of cut and, once this line is reached by the notch, the tensions of traction specific to the central zone (2 ') produce the tearing and the cutting of the material.
This traditional procedure has the following disadvantages, among others:
This is an extremely slow operation and with the risk of breaking the sheet. In addition, for its execution, it is necessary to call on expert and qualified personnel for this type of operations. On the other hand, the edge resulting from the cut has a notable irregularity, which requires the polishing of this edge.
To illustrate this irregularity in the edge of the cut, we have presented, in fig. 5, the area (9 ') of irregularity of the sheet (8'), area (9 ') which is between the lines (R-R) and which must be removed by polishing.
The device according to the invention uses a wheel, presented in FIG. 3, which, by its particular properties, makes it possible to obtain a perfect cut with large thicknesses.
This cutting wheel (6) comprises a discoid body, having at its periphery a double bevel creating a central cutting edge (A) and forming a determined angle (7), by which the wheel (6) will bear on the surface of the sheet to be cut. This point angle (7) is shown in detail in FIG. 8. In the center, the caster (6) is crossed by a tree.
This roller (6) is mounted on a head, which can perform, by means of a pantographic system or the like, the movements necessary to follow the cutting line, always parallel to the plane of the glass sheet to be cut.
Such a system is illustrated in FIG. 9, given by way of example for the circular cut. It comprises a support 12 on which the glass sheet 8 to be cut is placed. The radius of the cutting circle is adjusted by means of the crank 14 controlling a micrometric screw, the whole being actuated by a reducing motor 13. The roller 6 is pressed against the glass sheet 8.
In addition, this head is provided with a pneumatic cylinder providing a constant force for attacking the roller (6) on the glass sheet to be cut. It is very important that this force is constant and
perfectly perpendicular to the glass sheet, which explains the purpose of the pneumatic cylinder.
For cutting different thicknesses of glass sheet, different rollers should be used and the pneumatic cylinder of the head should be graduated according to different values.
As a general standard, the diameter of the wheel should be approximately equal to the thickness of the sheet to be cut.
The angle (7) of the roller also depends on the thickness of the glass to be cut; for example, for a sheet thickness of 8 mm, the angle (7) will be 157 and, for a thickness of 25 mm, this angle (7) will be 167 ".
Regarding the force with which the caster presses on the glass, for thicknesses of 8 to 10 mm, the pneumatic cylinder will be used at the 85 kg scale while, for maximum thicknesses, such as approximately 25 mm, the force to be applied will be from 160 kg.
Fig. 6 shows the roller (6) pressing against the glass sheet (8) by means of a force (M) supplied by a pneumatic cylinder not shown. Point (11) indicates the separation between the intermediate layer with internal compression tensions and the intermediate layer with internal tension tensions.
The theoretical explanation of the cut obtained by the device according to the invention is given in FIG. 7.
The force (M) supplied by the pneumatic cylinder gives rise to a first cut or notch on the glass sheet and the action of the components of (M) in the directions orthogonal to the lips of the caster (T1) and (T2), causes instant bending of the material. This distorts the internal tension diagram, reducing the thickness of the first compression layer, which then reaches the notch. The tensile stresses of the intermediate layer produce the tearing of the material.
In addition, given the regularity of the force (M), the irregularities of the cut will be much smaller, compared to those produced with a traditional device. Fig. 4 illustrates this fact, and makes it possible to appreciate that the irregularity zone (9) of the sheet (8) comprised between the lines (R-R) is much narrower than the zone (9 ') of FIG. 5, corresponding to a traditional device.
It goes without saying that it is necessary to have rollers of different characteristics according to the various thicknesses to be cut, and that it is necessary to adjust for each case the force exerted by the head which carries the roller (6).
The studies and experiments carried out have provided a formula relating the thickness of the glass to the point angle of the caster, determined by the two bevelled surfaces.
This report is as follows:
0.18
Cutting angle = 2 x sine arc (1 - glass thickness
glass thickness
The advantages of the device according to the invention appear immediately from the description. We can cite: - speed and safety in the operation, even with the greatest thicknesses, - elimination of the polishing operation or less polishing of the edges after cutting, - expert manpower not essential.
