Abstract

1431752 Diaphragms in fluid springs and dampers DUNLOP Ltd 24 April 1973 [4 May 1972 13 Oct 1972] 20806/72 and 47345/72 Heading F2S A rolling lobe diaphragm 1 for a fluid spring or damper is made of a linear block copolymer (i.e. a copolymer in which the constituent polymers are present). The diaphragm needs no fabric reinforcement (except possibly in the bead area) or liner. Desirable physical properties (Young's modulus, elongation at yield, and flexural fatigue-resistance) are specified. The copolymer preferably has "soft" amorphous segments of one of the polymers interspersed with "hard" crystalline segments of another of the polymers. The "soft" polymer segments may be a polyether, a polyester, a hydrocarbon polymer &c. (examples of which are given). The "hard" polymer segments may be polyester, polyamide, polyurethane &c. (examples of which are given). The diaphragm is preferably injection-moulded from a thermoplastic linear block copolymer of 35 parts polytetrahydrofuran and 65 parts of a mixed polymer based on poly-(butyleneterephthalate).
