Abstract

1426087 Polyurethane / addition polymer latices AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 5 Dec 1973 [9 April 1973] 56337/73 Headings C3P and C3R A polymer latex comprises a polyurethane latex and a polymer of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer which has been obtained by the free radical polymerization of said monomer(s) in the presence of the polyurethane latex. The unsaturated monomer may be polymerized in the presence of a latex of an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer which completely cures during the addition polymerization. The polyurethane may be derived from a polymeric diol (which may be a polyester, polyether, a polypropylene ether glycol, or a polyformal), and an organic diisocyanate. The isocyanate terminated prepolymer may be prepared from a polymeric diol, a small amount of a polymeric triol or tetrol and an organic diisocyanate. The polymerization of styrene, and methyl methacrylate, with and without acrylonitrile, is exemplified. In Examples 1 and 2 a prepolymer and fully polymerized polyurethane are prepared from polypropylene glycol, 2,2<SP>1</SP>- bis - (hydroxymethyl) propionic acid and 2,4<SP>1</SP>- tolylene diisocyanate.
