Abstract

1430977 Conveyers; rotating loads AF INDUSTRIES Inc 4 Oct 1973 [13 Nov 1972] 46429/73 Headings B8A and B8H [Also in Divisions B3 and C7] A metal slab treating apparatus comprises a base 18, a pair of independently rotatable slab supporting leaves 1,2, each pivotally mounted at 69 to the base 18 to rotate toward the other for transferring the slab 130 from one leaf to the other, means 74 for independently rotating the leaves 1, 2 and a platform 96 carrying a slab treating tool 122 and mounted for rotation and three directional movement relative to the leaves 1, 2. The base 18, formed from beams 20, is mounted on a concrete bridge 16 positioned in a pit 10. Each leaf is formed from longitudinal beams 26, 28 connected by transverse beams (30, 32, 34, 36) (Fig. 2, not shown), the beam 26 mounting slab stops 46. Each leaf is pivotable by hydraulic cylinders 74 which are pivotally mounted to the base 18 and the piston-rods 80 of which are pivotally mounted to the leaf. Located at the two outer corners of each leaf are spring bumpers (Fig. 9, not shown) which act as shock absorbers when the leaf supporting a slab 130 is lowered into a horizontal position. A pulpit 96 for the operator is rotatably mounted to a carriage 102 which is movable along transverse rails 104 which are in turn longitudinally movable along girders 106. The pulpit 96 is movable vertically by cylinders 98. The slab 130 is delivered to and removed from the apparatus by roller conveyers 128, 132 and is lifted on to and off the leaves 1, 2 by an electromagnet 120. When the apparatus is used to scarf a metal slab 130, the latter is lifted by the electromagnet 120 from the conveyer 128 on to the leaf 1 whereupon the leaf 1 is inclined by the cylinders 74 to enable an operator in the pulpit 96 to scarf the slab using a torch 122 pivotally mounted to the pulpit 96. When the slab surface has been scarfed, the two leaves 1, 2 are moved into parallel relationship and then moved together anticlockwise to transfer the slab 130 from the leaf 1 to the leaf 2 to enable the other surface of the slab 130 to be scarfed. The slab 130 is lifted by the magnet 120 on to the conveyer 132 upon completion of the scarfing operation. If the apparatus is to be used to quench a hot slab 138, Fig. 11, the leaves 1,2 are provided with water pipes 134 having spaced jets 136. The slab 138 is raised into the vertical position by the leaves 1, 2 so that the jets 136 are directed at the top and bottom surfaces of the slab 138. The apparatus may also be used for grinding and hand chipping the slab 130.
