Abstract

1430065 Coated fabrics JOHNSON & JOHNSON 18 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 22372/ 72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions D1 and G2] A fabric for removing unused charged electroscopic powder from the photoconductive surface of a xerographic copying machine comprises a non-woven fabric containing particles of zinc stearate attached to at least one surface thereof. Viscose rayon and/or cotton and/or vinyl alcohol fibres are carded or air laid to form a 15-20 g/m<SP>2</SP> web. 3.1 g/m<SP>2</SP> of a self crosslinking plasticised vinyl acetate vinyl acetate/butyl acetate binder is printed on in a pattern of four wavy lines per inch and the fabric dried over steam heated cans or in an oven. Alternative binders are crosslinked acrylates, plasticised crosslinked polyvinyl acetate, crosslinked stryrene-butadiene copolymers and other polymers and copolymers of acrylates, vinyl acetate, ethylene, vinyl chloride and vinylidene dichloride. The binder comprises 15 to 25% by wt. of the fabric. The bound web is passed through a homogeneous aqueous suspension containing 15% by wt. of zinc stearate particles and 0.25% by wt. of a modified cellulose or polyacrylate as thickener to stabilise the suspension. After mangling to leave 3.1 g/m<SP>2</SP> zinc stearate on the fabric it was dried over steam heated cans at 110‹C thereby softening but not melting the zinc stearate. Alternatively the zinc stearate particles are printed onto the fabric in a pattern of dots as a paste with water and thickener.
