Abstract

142,956. Jenks, G. C., and Lipscomb, P. J. March 1, 1919. Sliding-jaw wrenches; wrench handles.-Sliding jaw spanners in which the movable jaw slides between two shank members has the outer jaw, one shank, and a part of the handle formed as a drop-forging, and the remainder of the handle is formed integral with the other shank, and this part is attached near to the fixed jaw and at the handle part by welding, brazing, screws, or rivets. The fixed jaw a<2>, Fig. 2, is of the full width of the spanner and curves at a' into the integral shank a' formed with the handle portion a, which preferably has a thickness equal to the thickness of the shank and the space between the shanks, but may be thinner and fitted with a filling-piece. The fixed jaw is recessed at a<3> to receive the other shank, which carries a handle part of equal thickness, as shown in Fig. 3. The movable jaw slides between the shanks which have longitudinal grooves a<6> on their inner faces to admit of the use of a fully threaded operating-screw actuated by a nut arranged in apertures a<5> in the shanks. The curve a' is cut away between the shanks to permit the jaw faces to come together.
