Abstract
1428993 Electron beam apparatus ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 3 July 1973 31591/73 Heading H1D [Also in Division C7] An electron gun comprises an annular water- or oil-cooled cathode 50, typically of stainless steel, having a concave inner surface whereby the beam is focused on to a short length of travelling wire. The cathode is surrounded by an anode 52 having at each end a flange 53 extending radially inward to provide an aperture 54 of diameter less than the inner diameter of the cathode. The gun forms component 49 of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 for continuously heating wire 10 by glow discharge as it passes through evacuated chamber 13. The wire may be subsequently coated by sputtering in chamber 14 using the electron gun apparatus 56 as disclosed in Specification 1,425,754.
