Abstract

142,894. Brown, S. G. Jan. 8, 1919. Gyroscopic compasses.-A compass dial described as applied to repeater compasses may also be used for a master compass of the gyroscopic type. The dial is geared to turn faster than the normal rate in order to magnify the scale of the readings. In the Figure, the ratio of magnification is 4 to 1. Readings are taken against the lubber line b on the lubber ring B. The dial A carries rotatable disks D, each marked with four readings, one of which can be seen through a slot a. Each disk is turned through 90 degrees to exhibit a fresh reading when it passes the tooth e which engages its star-wheel d<1>. Thus readings are correctly given in all quadrants. An additional dial C may be arranged to turn at the normal rate. It is read against the lubber line b<2> marked on the projecting segment b<1>. The speed ratio may alternatively be 12 to 1 or other suitable ratio.
