Abstract
1377288 Connecting pin for bone fractures A FISCHER 7 March 1972 [13 March 1971] 10663/72 Addition to 1348952 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] A connecting element 1 for splicing a bone fracture 13 is as disclosed in the parent Specification, except that the expansion member 6 causing expansion of the expansible member 3 is not part of the rod 5, but is held within the expansible member 3, means 20 being provided on the rod 5 at the one end for engaging the expansion member 6 to draw it inwardly with the rod 5 when the expansible member 3 is to be expanded. The engaging means may comprise a projecting part 20, which arrangement allows the rod 5 to be positioned in the bone before the dowel pin 2 and expansion member 6, which are inserted over the rod 5 which passes through a bore in the member 6. Alternatively, the engaging means may comprise corresponding screw threads (30), (31), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the end of the rod (5') and in the expansion member 6; or may comprise diametrically opposed projections (40), Fig. 4 (not shown) at the end of the rod (5") which are passed through recesses (41) in the member 6, the rod (5") then being rotated so that the projections (40) lock into recesses (42) in the member 6. In the latter two arrangements, the dowel pin 2 and expansion member 6 are positioned in the bone before the rod 5, the rod 5 having a middle portion (32) of reduced diameter to enable it to be rotated in the dowel pin 2 to engage the member 6.
