Abstract

1427325 Lead-acid batteries JOSEPH LUCAS (BATTERIES) Ltd 22 May 1973 In a method of manufacturing lead-acid batteries firstly the required intercell connections are formed between packs of battery plates through the integral partition walls which divide the thermoplastics battery box into compartments, then the compartments are filled with the acid which is to define the electrolyte of the battery in use, and lastly a thermoplastics lid is secured to the thermoplastics battery box by placing the mating parts of each into physical contact with a heater to soften the mating parts and then pressing the lid and box together. The pack of battery plates may be preformed or may upon assembly into the compartments carry a suitable paste for conversion to the respective positive or negative plate material. This conversion may be carried out after the intercell connections have been completed by filling the compartments with dilute sulphuric acid of 1À050 s.g. and connecting to a D.C. supply. Whereafter the dilute sulphuric acid is removed and replaced by conventional battery acid of 1À25-1À28 s.g. Alternatively if an acid of 1À255 s.g. is used for the conversion it may be retained in the cell as the final electrolyte as it then has a resultant specific gravity of 1À28. As shown in Fig. 3 the heater 25 used to soften the internal peripheral shoulder 23 and the transverse ribs 24 of the thermoplastics lid 21 is undercut away from its surface of physical contact to ensure that the peripheral depending wall 22 of the lid is not heated.
