Abstract

1427182 Recoilless ammunition; launching of missiles MESSERSCHMITT-BOLKOWBLOHM GmbH 2 July 1973 [29 July 1972] 31334/73 Headings F3C and F3A In launching a missile from a tube the recoil is counterbalanced by an inert mass having a high specific gravity, the mass being propelled in the opposite direction through a nozzle plate extending over the rear end of the launching tube by gas pressure which is higher than that of the gas pressure applied to the missile. In an embodiment a launching tube 1 has, at one end thereof, a nozzle plate 2 having nozzles 3 dammed by aluminium foil 4 and has, at the other end thereof, an inwardly-directed flange 15 which retains a piston 6 in the tube 1 after the piston 6 has driven a missile 5 therefrom. A chamber 12 containing the missile and piston 6, is separated from a chamber 11 containing propulsive charges 13, the inert mass 7 and a piston 8 for propelling said mass 7, by a wall 10 having throttle apertures 9 therein. In another embodiment is shown in Fig. 2, a unit, comprising a tube 31 having a missile 25, a missiledriving piston 26, a low-pressure chamber 27, a high-pressure chamber 28, a counter-mass driving piston 29 and counter-mass 30 therein, is inserted in a launching tube 21. Charges 32, 33 are placed in the chambers 27, 28 respectively. A wall 34 which separates the chambers 27, 28 is impermeable to gas and a nozzle plate 23 has an annular nozzle 24 formed therein. Damming foils 35, 36 are provided. In a further embodiment launching tubes 41a, 41b, and 41c, Fig. 3, are connected to a container 42 having a nozzle plate 43 with nozzles 44 and containing a counter-mass 46, a piston 45 and a plate 47 having apertures 49 therein. A chamber 50 of the container 42 is supplied with pressurized gas from a source 53, via a non-return valve 52 and a conduit 51, the chamber connecting to a low-pressure chamber 57b of a tube 41b through apertures 62b formed in wall 58b of the container. Low-pressure chambers 57a, 57c, of tubes 41a and 41c respectively are supplied from a pressure source 61, via conduits 59a, 59c and valves 60a, 60c.
