Abstract
1426907 Electro-photography A B DICK CO 14 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 22880/73 Heading G2H The exposure of a photo-conductive member 10 is controlled by monitoring the electrostatic charge on the member as exposure proceeds and terminating the exposure when the rate of change of the average charge on the member, with respect to which an indefinite exposure would produce successive rates R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , moves from the R 2 rate characteristic of under exposure to the R 3 rate characteristic of over exposure. At time t 2 the second differential (graph c) of the charge level shows a sharp negative pulse, which operates a switch 23 to shut-off an exposing lamp 15. The exact time of t 2 , and the corresponding charge level V 2 , depend on the ratio of image matter to background in the original 13 reproduced. Preferably the member 10 is a zinc oxide coated paper, and its charge level is monitored by a lower earthed electrode 12 and an upper transparent electrode 11 through which the exposure is made.
