Abstract

1426565 Building panels; lattice beams D A CARGILL P M CORP and L M FORSTER 27 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972 9 Feb 1973] 9502/73 Headings E1B and EIW [Also in Division F2] An elongate sheet metal structural component comprises along at leastone side edge, spaced groups of asymmetrical prongs for driving into an adjoining element, each group including at least one pair shaped so that, in being driven into the element, they are bent respectively at least in directions which are towards each other. The components may form spacing and reinforcing members for a pair of panels or reinforcing for a single panel, the panels being of plywood, gypsum board &c and possibly having a finish coating e.g. of vinyl. In one form, the component comprises an integral series of inclined struts 16 of channel section, Figs. 1, 5, the prongs 44 protruding from the apices for penetrating boards 10, 12. Rows of components can be fitted at right angles to each other forming an egg-box type of construction, Fig. 16 (not shown). The apices 128 may be formed by bending a flat member, originally straight, to form the strut formation shown, the prongs 134 being precut to protrude when the metal is bent, Fig. 6. Prongs (1034') on one side of such a component may be welded to a metal bar (1012), only those (1034) of the other side being driven into the board &c 1010 and the bar (1012) serving as a tension member, Figs. 18-20 (not shown). Adjacent apices on the other side may be in two different planes on either side of that of the bar. The prongs may be shaped to bend away from each other as well as in directions towards each other, Fig. 10. The components may be sinuous strips, Fig. 12, cut from a sheet so that prongs 634 on one edge produce recesses 650 on the other, thus eleminating waste between the strips.
