Abstract

1425733 Rolling annular rings RHEINSTAHL AG 8 May 1973 [9 May 1972] 21751/73 Heading B3M A ring rolling mill includes internal and external rolls 5 and 3 for rolling a ring 7, the rolls being mounted on a carriage 2 which is moved away from the centre of the ring as its diameter increases, such that the centre of the ring remains stationary. The carriage is moved by hydraulic rams 4, and the roll 5 is movable relative to the roll 3 by a ram 6. The movement of the carriage can be controlled by a sensor 10 which detects radial movement of the ring. At the start of a rolling operation, however, the carriage and detector are movable independently. Frusto-conical rolls 8 act on the end faces of the ring and have their axes aligned with the centre axis 9 of the ring. Freely rotatable supporting rollers 15 are mounted in a similar manner. Centering rolls 11 may be used as additional sensors for increases in the ring diameter, or may be moved in response to signals from the sensor 10. The rolls 11 may be profiled to produce a desired profile on a finished ring.
