Abstract

1425174 Jointing by stamping; riveting PLESSEY CO Ltd 23 May 1973 [31 May 1972 (2)] 25474/72 and 25475/72 Headings B3Q and B3U [Also in Division B5] Hydraulic apparatus for a press tool, for example a riveting or crimping tool, comprises a main and secondary change-over valves 3A, 4 each including a spring 33, 16 to urge a valve element 32 or 14 into a first position, each valve element being moved into a second portion by fluid pressure acting on a small area A of the element, the fluid then acting on a larger area B of the valve element, the valve 3A in its first position supplying fluid to the working chamber 9 of ram 5a, and when at the end of the stroke the pressure rises and through a restrictor 1d acts on the valve to move it into a second position, the valve supplying fluid to the release chamber of the ram, the secondary valve 4 being arranged when the pressure rises in the return chamber at the end of the return stroke to change over and vent the fluid supply to area B of the main valve 3A so that it returns to its first position. Piston 11a of the ram may have a valve 42 leading via bores 45 and 46 to area B of the valve 3A and arranged to open, and thus switch valve 3A, if during the approach stroke of the piston the pressure rises due to an obstacle being encountered. The apparatus may work continuously or be stopped each time the pressure in the line 1c is exhausted.
