Abstract

1424405 Laminating thin layers KOEPP AG 27 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 20155/73 Heading B5N A covering foil (D) is applied to a substrate (A) by applying a thin layer (c) of a thermoplastic polyurethane and/or polyamide to a temporary substrate (B), producing the covering foil (D) in positive arrangement on the layer (C), removing the temporary substrate (B) and uniting the foil (D) to the substrate (A) by means of the layer (C). The layer (C) may be applied by brushing or doctoring to a thickness of 5-100 microns. After solidification the foil (D) is applied with or without adhesive. The following foils (D) are specified: (1) a poromeric polyurethane layer is split and bonded with heat and pressure via the split face to the layer (C), the poromeric material then being split again to leave a cellular layer of thickness, e.g. 30-150 microns with a suedelike surface; (2) fibrous flock of, e.g., cotton, viscose, rayon or polyamide is applied to a polyurethane or polyacrylate adhesive coating on layer (C), whereby imitation suede, plush and velour may be produced; and (3) thin non-self-supporting layers generally of thickness less than 10 microns, e.g. printing, silicone and finishing coats, which may be embossed, are applied to layer (C). The temporary substrate (B) may be ABS-treated paper, or cellulosic, polyethylene terephthate, polyethylene or polypropylene foil alone or laminated to paper. Lamination of the materials (C) and (D) to the final substrate (A), e.g. a textile web, may be achieved by passing the material BCD through rollers 5a, 5b, whereat the substrate (B) is removed to roller 8 and the combination CD is supported for lamination between rollers 5a, 3a and 3a, 3b. Lamination may be assisted by adhesive techniques or preferably by a polyurethene foam interlayer which has been flamebonded to the substrate (A) and then flamed by burner 6. In examples, this flame bonding technique is used to produce laminates of (1) knitted fabric-poromeric polyurethane, (2) cotton cross twill-cotton flock, and (3) high pile artificial fur-embossed polyurethane (resembling grained leather), an intermediate polyurethane layer (C) being present in all eases.
