Abstract

1424113 Packaging device for stacks of panels GLAVERBEL-MECANIVER 6 July 1973 [11 July 1972] 32238/73 Heading B8C A packaging device for a stack of panels 1 comprising stack support means 8, 9 side edge protectors 2, 3 and means 19, 20 for holding the protectors against opposed side edges of the stack is characterized in that said support means comprises support members 8, 9, which, when in use, seat on the ground and are spaced apart along the base of the stack and in that each side edge protector 2, 3 is detachably coupled to said support member. As shown, two identical channel members 2, 3 are applied against the side edges 4, 5 of a stack of glass sheets each member 2, 3, formed by bent sheet metal, being partially lined along its base with strips 6, 7 of flexible and resilient material such as felt, rubber, cardboard, &c., and having a pair of inwardly projecting tongues 15, 16 which removably engage a corresponding pair of grooves 11, 12 or 13, 14 in a lower support member 8 or 9. Each of the latter has a top cover of resilient flexible material 10. The assembly is held together by metal bands 19, 20, hook members 17, 18 facilitating the hoisting of the assembly, e.g. by slings. The strips 6, 7 may be attached to wooden supports and packing strips may be interposed between the stack and the sides of the channel members. Alternatively, packing sheets can be interleaved with the glass sheets. The channel members 2, 3 may be removed from the support members 8, 9 for re-use whilst leaving the stack supported by the members 8, 9. Before packaging, a plastics sheet or envelope can be placed around the stack. In a modification, Fig. 3, not shown, inturned flanges (29, 30) at the bases of the channel side members engage in corresponding recesses (26, 27) in the lower support members (25) which are made of wood. In an alternative arrangement the support members are secured to the respective channel members by transverse pins which may be in the form of dowels, bolts, or short threaded pins for insertion into holes in a support member. In a further modification, Fig. 5, not shown, each channel member is replaced by two L- shaped members (39, 40), hook members (50, 51) being provided on the back of each L- shaped member.
