Abstract

1,060,435. Suction grippers. HYSTER CO. Feb. 17, 1964 [March 27, 1963], No. 6475/64. Heading B8H. A suction gripping device comprises a sheet of elastomeric material secured to curved rigid plates 13, 15, the sheet being stretched so that edges of two openings therein fit around two metal expander members 61 secured to the plates, thereby causing the outer marginal portions of the sheet to project forwardly. A strip 41 of elastomeric material is secured to the sheet in a closed loop and is formed with a groove 43, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), which detachably secures a loadcontacting strip 51 having an elastomeric base portion 53 and a softer load-contacting portion 55. The plates 13, 15 are pivotally connected about a vertical axis 25, Fig. 2 (not shown), and are pivotally secured to a pair of brackets 19 on the lifting carriage of a lift truck. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), brackets 151 supporting the suction device are pivoted at 150 on a rotatable support 103 on the lifting carriage, and a hollow air-tight support member 107, secured to the support 103, acts as a vacuum reservoir. In a further modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the marginal portions of a plate 63x securing the elastomeric sheet 33a to the plate 13a adjacent the expander member 61a are provided with a relatively hard endless beading 121 for engaging and indenting into the outer layers of a paper roll to provide a region 123 of increased density, thereby to reduce the flow of air through the paper.
