Abstract

1423840 Glove boxes BRITISH NUCLEAR FUELS Ltd and UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 23 Nov 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 56987/72 Heading B4Q [Also in Divisions F3-F4] A containment by which a space is segregated from its surrounding atmosphere, e.g. a glove box, is provided with an extract system for the atmosphere of the containment including a vortex amplifier venting into the system, the vortex amplifier having its main inlet in fluid flow connection with the containment and a control inlet in fluid flow connection with the surrounding atmosphere. As shown, a glove box 1 has an air inlet 2 fitted with a filter 3 while an outlet 4 fitted with a filter 5 is connected as the main flow inlet to a vortex amplifier 6 having a control flow inlet 7 fitted with a filter 8 and an outlet 9 to a duct 10 provided with an extractor fan (not shown). A by-pass line 11 fitted with a filter 12 and a variable restrictor 13 connects the interior of the glove box 1 with the duct 10. Under normal conditions the only flow through the amplifier 6 is that through the control inlet 7 and this blocks off completely the main amplifier flow from the glove box 1. In the case of a small leak somewhere on the glove box, there will be a tendency to reduce the box depression. However this reduction means that less control flow is induced into the amplifier 6 and consequently a flow can then take place through the filter 5 and the amplifier 6 to the duct 10. This system uses the amplifier 6 as a standby safety circuit whereby the filter 5 can remain in an "as new" condition until a leak occurs.
